History of the Iota Iota Iota Chapter

In the late 1980’s, the idea of a graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi in Utah was given thought by several Brothers, who had been transplanted to the state.  The Brothers believed that a graduate chapter would be a better way to deeply seed and proliferate Omega roots in the state of Utah.  The only chapter that existed in the state at the time was Omicron Mu, an undergraduate chapter at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah founded in 1983.  By 1985, the last member of Omicron Mu graduated and the chapter became inactive.  By the spring of 1990, there were several graduate Brothers in Utah that decided a graduate chapter would have more longevity and provide a stable environment for the undergraduates in the state.

By the spring of 1990 a search for the Brothers in Utah found:

Lawrence Livingston                Karl Wilson                   Darryl McDaniel

Steve Baty                                Freddie Love                  Johnny Ledbedder

Donald Howard                        Raymond Christy           Nate Jones

Cliff Dozier                               Alfred Phillips               Willie Jones

Jerry Cheatom                           Darryl Johnston             Roy Griggs

Earnest Blossom                       Calvin Blossom              George Brown, Jr.

The first Meeting to establish a graduate chapter was held on April 21, 1989 with Bro. Raymond Christy presiding.  The first meeting was started with a reclamation and rededication ceremony.  The Brothers that attended dedicated themselves to:

  1. Rekindling the flame of Omega in their hearts
  2. Relighting the torch in the state of Utah to reclaim Brothers in the Salt Lake City area
  3. Select those men with the potential to carry the Principals of Omega forward

Brother Livingston, acting nominations chairman, took nominations for an executive committee to be formed and act on behalf of the Brothers. The following Brothers were nominated for the interim offices.

Basileus – Lawrence Livingston

Vice Basileus - Johnny Ledbedder

Keeper of Records and Seal - Raymond Christy

Keeper of Finance – Alfred Phillips

Chapter Recorder – Darryl Johnston

Chaplin – Alfred Phillips

Keeper of Peace – George Brown

At the next meeting, April 28, 1989 the Brothers unanimously approved the motion to establish a graduate chapter in the state of Utah.  The paperwork was submitted to the International Headquarters for a charter.  At the November 17, 1989 meeting, Brother Lawrence Livingston presented the Brothers with the Chapter’s new name: Iota Iota Iota.  On December 8, 1990, IHQ granted a charter for Iota Iota Iota chapter, Salt Lake – Ogden, Utah.  At the February 24, 1991 meeting the following Brothers were unanimously elected to serve as the first chapter officers:

Basileus – Lawrence Livingston

Vice Basileus – Dean Fowler

Keeper of Records and Seal - Raymond Christy

Keeper of Finance – Alfred Phillips

Chapter Recorder – Darryl Johnston

Chaplin – Alfred Phillips

Keeper of Peace – Jordan Pope

Brother Raymond L. Gibson, the 22nd 12th District Representative, presented the chapter charter in April 1991.
